Many autie baby books stop at the section for" First words"
We left it a blank.
Should we write the few words he had before regression
Or the 6 words he had from the age for 4 to 5
Or should we write about the thousand words he had at 5
( Mostly, I would like to write in the baby book about how much R taught us about language.
All the love he gave us without words, those first 5 years.
But there is not enough space in the baby book for that.
So I write about it here )
The art of conversation is a complex thing which takes much practice , but apart from social language proficiency - R is kind of a chatterbox now :-)
I rewrote an article about our journey to words for the amazing duo Danette Schott and Tiffani on their new website specialism here
I am going to break my rule of always posting content not just a link cause that is what Danette asked me to do and since she is so fabulous I am going to do as I am told !!
Here is the link
Please do pass along to any autie parents you know whose children are pre-verbal.

Thanks for sharing your experience. It is heartening to know of the progress R has made.
Great article. Well worth the read, and so proud of R and the progress you all have made together.
Thanks so much Lauren
Thanks so much Yuji for the nice comment . We had a time when we thought language would never come
Its always amazing to stop and take a minute and look back. Amazing the progress you guys have made. Alex took the other route and willed his words out as soon as he could. He's never stopped talking.
And I unloaded those baby books---there were so many milestones we missed it became quite depressing.
I'm glad you can see your son for what he is---a beautiful little boy.
Very good article! I Alex struggled most with the motivation part and it was a huge hurdle for him to overcome. You must feel good when you look back and see how far R has come!
K, you always tickle my mind and pierce my heart!!!!! Mine was a world full of words until I met Rach. So I guess our journey was on different paths but the destination was the same.... Love for our respective treasures.. :)
there is a song, that Allison Krause sang: "When you say nothing at all"
It's amazing how you can speak right to my heart.
without saying a word you can light up the dark.
try as I may I can never explain
What I hear when you don't say a thing.
The smile on your face lets me know that you need me
there's a truth in your eyes saying you'll never leave me.
the touch of your hand says you will catch me whenever I fall.
you say it best when you say nothing at all.
All day long I can hear people talking out loud.
but when you hold me near
you drown out the crowd.
try as they may, they can never defy.
what's been said between your heart and mine..
Like I said to me talking is overrated...but for you I am so glad and happy that your path is brightened by it...
Loved the article! I appreciate it especially because we are struggling with language right now. You give me such hope!! HUGS
thank Kris .. we feel so great .. of course there is still a very long long way to go
Liz .. I really think its so healthy that you unloaded those baby books
I feel like we should write our own - these extreme parenting roads are so different no ?
what a lovely comment mr Daddy - Rach and you are so lucky to have found each other
a couple of years ago while driving home ( when R was struggling with hardly any words ) I happened to put an old CD of Notting Hill and I heard this song
It took on a completely new meaning and moved me so
Thanks so very much Lisa .. Never give up -- it will come - the boy is so bright and has so many strengths
All I can do is smile! :)
Little Bird's baby book has all the same blanks!
I, too, have learned more about love through non-verbal language than ever before :)
I know exactly what you mean
